I have a 1x9 setup with sram x7 shifter and x9 rear with an SLX 9 speed double and bash chainset (frankenbike!)

I want to go 2x9

Question is does it matter if I get a 2x10 speed front shifter and 10 speed front mech, only I cannot find any 2x9 shifters (especially on ebay)

What compatabilty setup will make this work??

Cheers

TM

Most of my 2x9 set-ups are using 3x9 front shifters so you always go with one of those if you're struggling to find a 2x9 one.

It's certainly never been a problem with mine. You just wind the limit screw on the front mech so it' can't shift any further then the 2nd ring.

Recently I thought it might be a good idea to swap the spools in a couple of Sram X0 front shifters (ie 2sp for 3sp) to make a semi-kosher 2x9. Cue needle nose pliers, springs everywhere and lots of swearing/headache. But now at least I know how to rebuild them. In conclusion it's not worth the hassle, better to stick with the 3sp and adjust the limit screw/s.

Don't do it! The front mech cage is narrower you will get rubbing at one point of the mech. Just get a 9 speed front mech.

I'm running a 2x10 XT front mech with everything else 9 speed (3x9 XTR shifter and 9 speed cassette / chain). All works fine - in fact the 10 speed mech shifts far better than the older 9 speed ones did. Go figure.
