Looking to go 1x9 . At the moment using a 32t middle. Would it be better to use a 36t or 38t for a 1x9 setup
keep using a 32t unless your rides are mostly downhill
Where you riding?
If it's going to be primarily lift assisted DH riding, then a 36 or a 38T ring would make sense.
Otherwise, stick with a 32T for definite. I've got a 32T with an 11-32T cassette on one of my bikes, and I can get up all but the steepest of hills like that. With a 36 or a 38 on, I'd not be able to for sure, and as it is, I only ever use 8th and 9th cogs on long fast DH sections anyway, so I'm not running out of gears.
You'd need pretty big legs for a 38T, a lot of the Elite XC boys only have 36/38t on their race bikes.
Do you ever use the outer ring? If so is it for fire road use or just to stop the chain flapping? Do you ever use the granny ring? Again, if so how much?
i run a 32t with a 11-34 on the rear for rides around the quantocks and mendips. it works well, a 36/38 would kill me though.
its a great drivetrain as it really make you use your cassette more efficiently. i run a mrp chain device also.
I swopped my 32 for a 36 that I had lying around, as I thought it wouldn't make a huge amount of difference, but to be honest two rides in down here in South Wales/Afan area I'm about to swop it back to the 32, as it is one hell of a drag on some of the climbs round here
ok, i stick with 32t. i dont have a front mech fitted, so already doing the 1x9 thing. so i could take off the inner and outer anyway. i get no chain jumping at the moent to the inner. but shorting the chain by a few links?
32T/11-32 here. Worked perfectly for me on the Twrch round Cwmcarn yesterday but as above, depends on your riding style and where you ride really.
Kev
I use a 36t ring with 11-34 cassette, but it's pretty flat round here. I ran a short Sram X0 rear mech with a short chain and didn't have many problems with the chain jumping off, but got a Pauls Chain Keeper just to be on the safe side.
Was using 36 with 11-34. Was a bit of a struggle on the hills.
34/11-34 on mtb and 38/12-27 on the cx
34/11-34 here too.
36t here but its a bit of a killer for me on steep stuff.i want to go to a 32t.
anyone using a 36t with a 36t 10spd at the rear?
Using 32T with 11/34 cassette here, with an N Gear jumpstop and bash guard to keep the chain on. That's riding alpine terrain as well....
Specialized enduro 05, 36+ lb 6" suspension bike here, set up soft.
11/34 rear, 32 front. can be a tough grind at times as standing and beasting isn't the most gentle of ways to get up slippery climbs. thinking 2x9 might be a LOT more adaptable to my spindly legs so I might swop back at least for Winter [to 36/22].
It sure is nice [with the 1x9] not to have as much mud gathering on the chain for transfer to mech and cassette tho, since the single front ring leaves the chain further from the tyre than the granny would.
I'd have to say I'm not in love with the chainline in bottom gear tho.
32t front with an 11-34 cassette is good for most stuff. I found it crap for long climbs Long Mynd-style though but then I'm not very fit.
would i need to get a bashring and smaller chain ring bolts
I'm using 32T just because I have loads of 32T rings lying around
But it seems pretty good. Sure I could get away with 34T for most of my riding though
where can i get spacers for chainring bolts
๐That's riding alpine terrain as well....
trails running muddy but good today

I've been running 1-9 only trail bikes around the peaks for a couple of years now and I reckon an easiest gear of 1:1 ratio is a good place to start. I currently run 33t with an 11-36 cassette and tbh could have gone for a bigger ring up front but it's nice to have a lazy option!
