11-32 cassette
probably a 42t SS chainring

will I need a chain keeper or is there a chance it'll be ok?

Yup, works well.
11-28 with a 105 rear mech and an unramped 42T Salsa chainring.
I do use a N-Gear Jump Stop on the inside though.

I used to use a 42 and a 12-27 cassette. I didn't use a guide/ keeper.

use a 48t ramped deore front ring and it drops all the time when dropping off kerbs and stuff. Fitted my own chain device (a front mech cage and a plastic bracket) and it's been fine since.

i ran 1x9 on a roadrat, the front chainring had a guard on it but never had any bother

As epo-aholic, Roadrat 45 front and a 105 cassette with a 105 rear mech. Worked a treat.

i was running 11-25 with a 42t un-ramped on my tri-cross and using the n-gear thing too - the jump stop is really good, chain never came off riding but if it ever was pushed off in transit or when cleanign you could pedal it back on like you had a mech

i now have a double ring as scottish hill routes are too steep
