Am going for a 1x9 speed on the commuter does anybody have any recomendations for chainguides and set up advice

Probably wont need anything. I've been running 1x9 for 2 years on my MTB and the chain's never dropped once

off road I use a cheap fsa bashguard

and an N-gear jump stop on the inside.

Here's mine. Nothing on at all. Just make sure the chain is tight, oh and use a short cage derailleur and you should be fine

As others say, you'll probably get away with it, but you can use an E Thirteen SRS. I have one on a 1x9 DH hardtail and it works really well.

I use an unramped chainring in a 1x9 setup on my commuter - no chain device needed.
