Is it a case of chain round big front and rear without the rear mech, then +2 links on fs frame with wide range Zee mech?

I'd suggest you take the shock out and sit the bike right down as if it's bottomed.
a lot of frames will see more than 2 links worth of "grow" best to be sure that it will work in the absolute worst case IMO...
