[Closed] 160mm bikes, who uses a single ply rear tyre?

[#3173921]

just wondering what people get away with? ive tried repeatedly to find a single ply tyre that can take a good thrashing at 25-30 psi without pinching, but now ive given up.

I run flow rims tubeless and tend to pinch holes in the tyre if i run a single ply below 35-40 psi. single ply tubeless/ust seem just as bad. currently running a 2.5 tubeless dual ply high roller and am happy with it, but it never hurts to shed a little rolling weight!

Yup. Single ply ignitor or swampy in wet weather.

single ply minion 2.35 on mine very few flats (touches wood) 35ish psi
Used to get loads of flats but better tyres slightly more pressure and a skill increase saved me from death by puncture

I've been using Minion F 2.5 Exos for the last year and a bit. Had them tubeless but only suffered one flat tyre in about 14 months

Don't mean to be offensive but how much do you weight?

I would have thought pinch flats are more likely on a hardtail as on a full susser some of the impact is taken out. Spose you will be riding faster though so swings and roundabouts.

Maybe you need to try something with loads of volume like a rubber queen 2.4.

I ran 2.4 Rubber Queens for six months over the winter, come the summer the rear died very quickly. The UST version I'm running out back now has far more beef to the carcass and is holding up great.

I've only ever used dualplies for downhill, and even then not always. But then I'm light, and not hard on kit.

You could maybe try the SX compound Specializeds, they're a sort of ply-and-a-half, lighter than duals but tougher than singles.

I like my Clutch SX but still managed to pinch flat the front tyre recently ๐Ÿ™ But I am fairly heavy at about 14 stone.

Single ply 2.35 minion and highroller @ 30psi on the rear, with a schwalbe DH tube.

They're my "XC" tyres, so don't get as good of a thrashing as my "DH" tyres, but they're used readily for peaks. Had problems when i used lower pressures, but 30psi is about right for me.

But then you gotta bare in mind riding styles, weight, suspension and technique.

Why not do the same as me and im sure others, if you're going on a longer ride, use the single plys and maybe not attempt monster trucking so much, then use dual plys on rides where you know you'll want to let rip.

Also rim width plays a factor in pinch flats, wider rim generally means less pinching.

You also got to bare in mind that you're tubeless too, less support for the tyre, so the tyre will have less resistance to deforming leading to pinching. Your tubeless 35-40psi will be moulding to the ground more easily than a equivalent pressured tubed counterpart and should be giving more grip. Are you saying you need <30psi for grip based on your tubed experience?

I've seen jedi land and its pretty smooth so I dunno if his advice is much cop... ๐Ÿ˜€

I use dual ply high rollers with the maxxis dh tubes in them (2mm thick) weighs a ton but I havent had a puncture in 2 trips to morzine and a trip to spain riding on sharpened marbles. I'm 14 stone and when I land its like a baby elephant being booted out the back of a slow moving hercules.

I always run single plys on mine, normally 2.35 maxxis but I do run 35-40psi and I only weigh 10 stone. It's riding in the peak district that does it I tell ya...

Perhaps you could reduce damping on high speed compression setting?
This could prevent spiking or perhaps increase the spring rate to stop bottoming out?

Single ply minion 2.35 here, tubeless on Flow with stan's rim strip. 30psi rear.

It's surprised me as it's held up to some pretty fast, rocky stuff in the Lakes and Scotland as well as at home.

I do try to pick a decent line and unweight the rear on sharp-looking bits if I can though.

Another vote for 2.35 minion here.

And Jedi can vouch for my poor landing technique. ๐Ÿ˜†

But I go up to dual ply or 2.5 for the Alps.

+ 1 more for Rubber Queen Black Chilli 2.4's.

Took them to France / Italy this summer for loads of DH stuff on a 160mm bike, ran them around 25-30psi and no issues. 2nd year I've done this also. More of issues with the Rims dinging (ZTR Flows) and the tyres stayed sealed.

Wouldn't run them to ride up anywhere I don't think though.

Very happy with the stock tyres on my enduro , clutch and purgatory . No pinch flats , even in Andorra (and i'm lazy as i forget to check the pressures now and again)

I have always run 2.35 single plys on my trail bike, at around 30psi for my 10.5st weight, with no problem.

However, this year I've got loads, in fact I got two yesterday! This is unheard of for me, I reckon I puncture once a year normally. The only change is the rims, and I think that the problem is that they are not rounded on their edge, so when the tyre is deformed in an impact, a puncture results. What are the edges of the Flow rims like?

Rickos, currently a tracer with a ccdb and 170mm coil lyriks. Same issues on a patriot 66, commencal supreme, coil shocked spicy, zesty, orange 5...

I know I *could* just go slower but I really only ride for the scary fun times, not the scenery or the exercise

I've tried the rubber queens, probably one of the tougher single ply tubeless tyres I tried.

I don't like backing off on longer rides either, I'd sooner lug around something that will stand up to a bit of abuse. I tend to not pick smooth lines, I like to challenge myself a bit! That sounds a bit corny but it keeps familiar trails interesting.

I'll try a minion next, possibly 2.5 if they do one. Thanks all!

pinch punctures happen for a very simple reason, whenever I get one I'll usually know exactly what caused it.
either learn to be smother, stop taking square edge hits flat out, run higher pressure or switch to a dual ply and if you're really clumsy a DH tube too.

GW, I'll take option 4.

Like you, I'll always know what I did, it's part of the fun going for something stupid from time to time...

single ply crossmark here but i pump it up from 25-30 to bout 40 if i know i'm going to do rocky stuff.
Going to go tubeless to try and get rid of the pinch flats i constantly get.

I'm using specialized clutch sx for DH duties and no issues so far. Fourteen stone ten on an alpine 160. Another vote for Bonty Big Earl wets tubeless.

I would have thought pinch flats are more likely on a hardtail as on a full susser.........

Odly, I find the opposite too, Riding down the steps from Captain Cooks in Guisbrough on the singlespeed, no problem, try the same on the Pitch and I double pinched!

And riding down Skiddaw I struggled to make 2 minutes between flats!

I have the same problems on a humble 140mm ๐Ÿ™
Running flows with yellow tape at about 40 PSI.
Standard single ply tyres just seem to be too weak in the sidewall when I use them on the rear. I've tried S/P Advantage and Larsen TT but ripped sidewalls of both within a couple of rides.

Reluctantly, I've given up on S/P on the back and now use LUST versions instead. Larsen TT LUST is doing well at the moment.

On the front however, I've only ever run S/P S/T Minion and they've been excellent on that end at 25 - 30 PSI

I'm about 14 stone in my gear but run my setup as recommended for a 16st rider cos I bottom out too much at my own settings.

Helvellyn today with no flats on my 2.5 dual ply UST highroller. Think I'll keep it...
