does this mean the death of the 135mm QR ? just bought a new frame 🙁 or can you convert to this new standard ? also would xc and trail bikes need it i'm really not sure !

yes, your whole bike is now obsolete, you'll not be able to ride it after 31st December 2010

Lets hope it dies along with tapered headtubes and BB30. Just the industry's way of getting you to spend more.

I think that you'll be ok!

It's probably only gonna start appearing on DH and AM bikes, I think there's all kinds of "standards" that do nothing for us but if you've ever tried to get a bolt thru axle into a rear wheel you'll probably appreciate the syntace approach!

thanks guys I only have 9mm QR on me hardtail so I dont think I could convert as you cant chang the drop outs but i'm not that bothered ...:(

Jeez sorry Dougal- I don't get the chance to trawl the internet all day- but bike radar (where I assume you read it) state that is currently unique among xc bikes- so before that announcement was made I would have stuck by what I said!

It will make it easier for belt drive. Large front rings need to be spaced out beyond the limits of the cassette on a 135mm OLD.

Spend more how exactly bigbugsbaws? Either your new bike will come with it or it wont! They're aren't many 'frame only' bikes with this standard AFAIK.

I understood the spacing to be the same as 135mm, but with the added part sitting in the frame to allow easier fitment of wheels, like on bolt through forks.

Thats right Badgerpoo. There is an extra 3.5mm each side that allows the hub to sit in a ledge in the drop-outs on each side. So far this standard seems to be on complete bikes so compatibility isn't really an issue.

My mtb tandem seems fine and the hope biguns I had were great but bloody heavy

yep...alaskan bike manufacturers have been using hadley and phil wood tandam hubs for snow bikes for a few years...speedway cycles now do there own cheaper hubs...165mm rear(5mm spacers on 160mm hubs) 135mm front...

also phil wood 100mm BBs...my surly has one,some tandams used these wider BBs..

165mm!! Even DH bikes only use 150mm. The point of the 142 standard is that the actual spacing between the drop outs is still 135mm. The extra width is in the hub end caps.

Apparently that's 142mm but not compatible with other 142mm hubs.

i guess the issue is more with hub compatability. I would think that any hub that is compatible with 135 x 12mm should be easily convertible to 142 x 12 mm. I have a Yeti ASR-5 with a set of Crossmax SX's, the rear hub comes with both 9mm and 135 x 12 mm setup and I have bought a 135 x 12 mm conversion kit. It certainly makes a very stiff rear wheel attachment.

Any hub that can take a 12mm axle should be able to have the end caps swapped for longer ones. Hope I think already do some for Pro2s.

It sort of makes sense, as trying to get the back wheel in on a bolt through rear end is a bit of a PITA, as there's no way of locating the wheel in the frame. This addresses that problem.

You seriously think a 12mm axle does not make a difference to QR? I can feel quite a difference with a 10/135 thru axle, I figure the main reason for this standard over existing 10/12mm axles is how easy it is to mount a wheel (so maybe this might actually end up being used)..

Hopefully we'll soon see the end of QR on proper bikes.

Hope, DT, I9 already have adapters. I expect King / Hadley will follow shortly. So really well enough thought out that nobody with a proper wheelset should have to end up with more then a £15 bill for the new end caps (ok, some might require a different axle).
