[#5694902]

After having my Meta 5 stolen at the start of the week I've been told by the insurance company that I'll be allowed to choose a bike of £1000 in value. I'm hoping they'll let me add to that with another £800 or so, although ideally I'd rather only add another £500.

I'm after a 650b hardtail, 140-150mm of travel. What out there? I've seen the Meta HT, and the Marin Rocky Ridge (scroll down).

Anything else worthwhile?

They were supposed to contact me today, but didn't so I'm not 100% sure what brands they'll be able to get hold of yet. For now I'm assuming a free-choice of whatever's out there

Looks good, will have to chuck that triple on the classifieds for a 1*10 setup though (probably just sell the cranks, detailers, etc and stick XT cranks and a Zee mech/shifter on). Room to breathe in the price for tweaking that setup though.

Some good suggestions on here - http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/where-are-all-the-650b-hardtails

Nicolai Argon

Identiti AKA

and Pipedream are bringing out a 650b that will take a 140mm fork - arrives January I'm told.

Great thread, thanks.

Transistion TransAm? Available in both 27.5 and 29.

I can only see 26 and 29 on their site. Am I missing something…?

Seems to be a lot of 100mm XC bikes out there, not a huge selection in the way of trail/AM bikes in the hardtail bracket though :/

It certainly looks pretty tasty on paper. II'm betting I won't be able to get my hands on one through insurance though, even if I wait.

Dan, I think you must be on a different site somehow. Try this:-

http://transitionbikes.com/2014/Bikes_TransAM275.cfm?Token={ts_2013-11-15_16:36:53}-d4caa4b2040974dc-2A5BFA35-9B38-E04C-1D046B8BCAC89B58

I know on 29er version the fork is nominally 120mm but you can fit a 140mm fork. The 650b is 140mm out of the box so will probably take a 150mm or even a 160mm - email the guys at Transition to check, they'll get back to you in true surfer dude style language: "Yeah bro, that'll be a sweet ride dude". They sound pretty cool and always happy to help/advise.

They're Steel, so you're looking at a high 20lb build so should be burly enough for true AM duties - whatever that means.

I got my Covert 29 from Plush Hill Cycles in Church Stretton, Shropshire, so I can recommend them if you decide to take the plunge. But 18 bikes in Glossop also look pretty good.

Daniel I had an insurance claim in May through Wheelies, I was not happy with the specialised they were offering so took a cash settlement. They paid money direct to bank in 48hrs.

Strange, that NS looks almost identical to the Transition TransAm…

Do try to avoid Wheelies if you can, they are an absolute shambles of a company. There was a recent thread on here where numerous riders had a similarly awful experience as soon as they had any problems with the bikes they'd been supplied.

I've been told the company dealing with it is "Direct validation services"… they seem to be some subsidiary branch of Direct Line. I will probably try and wangle cash out of them, but I'm not too hopeful… it's not actually my insurance, it's the parents but I'm covered under it while I'm a student.

That TransAM is gorgeous. Now, if I can get them to do me a build kit for it I could buy the frame…

Just priced up a build on one, XT cranks, SLX stoppers, Zee mech/shifter, wide narrow ring, etc. Just a few pennies under 2k. Similar build to package 2 on their site, only suited to my preferences.

Dan, I think you must be on a different site somehow.

Not sure what site I was on, but thanks for the link!

What, the bloke with the brake issue? If so, less an issue with Wheelies, more an issue with him IMO.

No, quite a few forum users - including myself - sharing their experience of Wheelies really not giving a **** once they have your insurance money.

Just had an email from the Insurance company asking me to fill out a spreadsheet of all the bike parts… will be interesting to see how they react to replacing it for a grand.

This is what I just sent them back:

Those Whyte hardtails look fantastic. I used to have an Orange crush. Was very heavy. That was 4 years ago mind
