too much travel, upset the handling?

It will only reduce the head angle by 1 degree - doubt you'd really notice it. I've just moved my Spark from 100 to 120 and can't say I notice the slacker head angle.

has the extra suspension improved the ride?

I've not really noticed so far, I never had an issue with 100mm, but saw some 120mm forks on Merlin with 40% off, so took the opportunity to upgrade.

I'd be more worried about the extra stress on the headtube ripping the thing off tbh.

Scott changed the Spark from 100mm to 120mm (2008 model year?).. no frame alterations.
My spark when running 120mm forks is much friendlier to ride.
My spark with 100-120-140mm talas is perfect for any trail/marathon ride/race!

Scale with 120mm.. why not. shorter stem than stock and you'll probably start ripping the descents.
You may want to check with Scott though before throwing an extra 20mm (or 40mm depending on your model year)

120mm is the sweet spot on my genius too.

i had an old scott scale with talas forks, and used to run them with 110 most of the time, but it rode fine at 130. Id say go for it
