I've set up the indexing so the cable tension is at it's least tight, but 1 click still cleanly moves up a cog. Next couple of single-shifts work fine but then at about cog 4/5 it skips two?
This happens both on the trail and in the workstand?! Makes it really hard to select and stick with one of the most useful mid-cassette gears.

Setup is:
shimano slx 12spd shifter and derailleur
sunrace 12spd cassette
new inner/outer cable
derailleur end stops adjusted correctly

Any thoughts on something obvious?

+ 1 for hanger alignment as a first check (with a tool, not just by eye, and even if it's new), and playing with the B-tension may also help as they can be a bit sensitive to both too much and too little.

+1 mech hanger. Ive just set up a new 12spd drivetrain. hanger looked ok, everyting was new shifted badly, really badly. Put an alignment tool on it and it was maybe 5-6mm ff at the rim. Straightened hanger and its now perfect. No noise, no chain droppping on backpedalling, best gearshifting ive ever had.
