Anyone know if I can buy an off the peg standard chainring and put it into a 10speed groupset? Are 10sp rings thinner to accommodate the chain?

9 and 10 speed are interchangeable. The inner pitch bit of a 9 and 10 speed chain is the same, and that's what counts for chainrings.
