Have you taken the cable fully out or just undone it at the mech?

I've fixed ultegra ones with similar issues with a spray of WD40 in the mechanism.

My 5800 front mech had an issue whereby if you accidently changed down when you were already in the smaller ring it would no longer change up, it behaved as you are describing. If I then used my hand to push it over while changing everything would work again, up and down with no issues. The bike had to go back for a warranty frame replacement and the problem went away never to return. I spoke to the mechanic who rebuilt everything as part of the warranty work and he put it down to a cable issue. As that was the only thing changed I guess it had to be that.

Possibly strands of cable stuck in the lever. I think there's an access panel on the bottom you can remove to check. Disconnect all cables, stick a fresh inner in, gently pull on the inner where it comes out of the lever and see if the lever works correctly.

I'm pretty sure the mechanic I talked to said it could be a little as a single strand causing the issue.

It's not the 105 5800 RS700 flat bar shifters is it? They seem to jam up for a pastime!

Considering going 1x, currently the wife runs 34-50 and 11-32, we live in the north lakes, would 42 11-36 give a similar range i accept that loosing some at the big gear end 42-11 is smaller than 50-11

Also i assume all that is needed is a narrow wide chainring to start with and casssette and chain
