[Closed] 10 speed chain rings with 9 speed chain, does it work?

Hi folks question as title...

Would using a 10 speed chainset/chainrings with the rest of the drive train as 9 speed work? I've used 8/9 speed mix before which was fine, but not sure if 10 speed rings are narrower so it will not shift as well or cause problems with a 9 speed chain and front mech.

I can get the equivalent 10 speed £20 cheaper hence the question, and when other things need replacing I could start converting to 10 speed throughout.

Thank you.

my girlfriend's bike has a 10-speed shimano crankset running perfectly with 8speed SRAM shifters+mechs+chain+cassette.

I understand that the internal dimensions of the chain are the same. But 9 speed are wider over all, meaning that chain rings are interchangeable but cassettes are not. This may vary slightly between manufacturers though
