I need a new chainset on my road bike. It is all 9 speed but I am having problems finding a 9 speed chainset quickly. Will it be ok to
use a 10 speed chainset with the rest of the drive train being 9 speed?

Thanks for your help, as I don't want to waste the holiday not be able to get out on the bike.

You'll be fine. (Assuming chain not too worn for new rings...)

My road bike has:
10sp 105 right shifter
9sp XTR Shadow rear mech
10sp Ultegra cassette
10sp SRAM PC1080 chain
3sp Tiagra front shifter
2sp Tiagra front mech
9sp Strionglite big ring
8sp Sora little ring
Dura-Ace double chainset (from 9sp group)
XT bottom bracket (from 9sp group)
Ultegra rear hub (from 8sp group)
No problems at all. With that lot anyway, the headset is about knackered.
.
As long as rear shifter, chain and cassette match (number of gears and not mixing Shimano/Campag you'll be OK. Also, don't mix Shimano/Campag cassette and hub)

Yes it'll work, I changed my wifes bike (9 speed Tiagra) from a triple to an Ultegra 10 speed compact chainset I had spare and worked fine. Even kept the triple shifter and front mech and just wound the stops in, shifts perfect

Difference in chainring width is tiny, something like 9speed is 1.8mm, and 10speed is 1.65mm
It will still shift just about as well (you have to be German to appreciate the difference) but might wear slightly faster than a dedicated 9 speed.

Think I must be German then. I can just notice the chain catching on the big ring when riding the middle ring and two smallest sprockets.
