I am giving a 1 x9 set up a go for the summer. I have a 11 34 block but what front chainring are you using? 32, 34 or 36. Looking at a middleburn non ramped and pinned version. Any ideas

32t with 11-34t cassette works for me on my 1x9 set up

Not tackled any major climbs with it but I'd just get off and walk if the terrain was too much for me, it's just as quick in a lot of cases to get off and walk the bike as it is to sit and spin in a granny ring

I went for a Surly single speed specific chainring as I wanted a silver 5 bolt compact chainset version, but any s/s specific chain ring will do nicely

Also using a E13 XCX ST chain guide, not lost the chain yet, might go for a Paul's Chain Keeper as they're much tidier looking

Got an 11-32 XT cassette out back, with a 32T chainring at the mo, running a Superstar XCR chain device. All seems to work flawlessly, though only a few hours to show so far. Will more than likely be ditching 9spd for 10spd soon though, so I can run an 11-36 out back still with the 32T up front I reckon. It'll pretty much be only on downhill sections on road, and the fastest offroad fireroads, where you can spin out with 32 up front and 11 out back, unless you're a real gear masher.

That said, plenty of people are gear mashers, and would want a bigger chainring in the first place. Try one, if you don't like it, change it!

Chainring wise, just get any unramped chainring, plenty of them about on the market, just make sure it's narrow enough to run a 9spd chain on it though (ie. it's not 1/8" specifically for singlespeeds). I've got a 32T by Gusset on my bike, other chainrings I've had in the past have been by FSA, Blackspire, Shimano (Saint), and there's a whole myriad of others too. Buy one you like the look of and that doesn't break the bank!

11-34 out back with a Blackspire 34T up front. Superstar Plasma chain device with a RaceFace bash.

More than enough for the terrain I ride regularly, and has been OK at Laggan and Dalby in hillier terrain. Am off to Brecon and Brechfa in a week or so and trust it will work fine there too.

34 rental chainring and 11-34
Proper chain device
Fine everywhere I've tried so far - cannock and peaks
Like the simplicity of straight up and down the cassette
