my brother needs some 120mm forks and has been offered a set of these cheap. can you reduce travel like on the older models or is this not the case any more?

Nope, but you could run them really soft with plenty of sag! If they're that cheap! I know it's not ideal and may not be too good for your frame, but....

Wondered if my standard spring was a tad firm and tried the soft with lots of sag myself, can't recommend not trying it highly enough, it was truly awful.

Yes you can with a spacer and either by trimming the spring or using an older (shorter) vanilla fork spring.

No - the fox website says you can't with the 09 ones, I looked into it a while ago when deciding between Vans and Floats (you can with Floats).
