Fresh Goods Friday 800: The Wide Bars Edition

Welcome to the 800th edition of Fresh Goods Friday!

When you see/hear the number 800, what do you think of? Perhaps you think of the 2023 bio pic about cricketer Muttiah Muralitharan who, as we all know, holds the record of 800 test wickets. Perhaps you don’t think of this.

Possibly you may think of 800 being the full width in millimetres of most modern mountain bike handlebars. Do you run such pipes uncut? Or do you have a special number that you like to run your bars at. FWIW I reckon that 777.7mm is the correct width. How about you?

DOES your home insurance really cover your bikes

No reason

Mud Plugger

Mud Plugger is a simple push-fit plug that helps prevent this by sealing the crown opening. Yes, much like the Crud Bung from two decades or so ago. Helps prevent water and debris entering cavities. Simple push-fit installation. Two sizes available: fits openings up to 25mm and 40mm. Behave.

Snide Powerlinks

  • Price: ยฃ5.80
  • From: eBay

Through a combination of 27.5 rear wheels, massive dangling rear mechs and ebike motors I have had a recent spate of snapping chains. Hence the acquisition of these solid gold (coloured) quicklinks. Are all powerlinks basically the same? I guess I’m about to find out.

TrickStuff Standard Brake Pads

Something from TrickStuff that doesn’t cost four figures. In fact, I’m surprised that these pads don’t have a higher RRP than ยฃ24. Partly inspired the recent (ish) pad revamp from Hope, that I think is a big reason as to why Hope brakes are now the best brakes out there, we’ve got these in to see if they can add some extra oomph to some brakes that aren’t quite up to snuff.

Stale Goods Friday – 2016 Orange Segment RS

Back in ye mists of time – 2016 is apparently 10 years ago – we typeth: “Ah yes, the Segment has had something of a redesign โ€“ not that itโ€™s hugely obvious. Firstly, itโ€™s worth mentioning that that colour is totally gorgeous. We like, a lot. So whatโ€™s changed for Segment 2.0? Well, itโ€™s got more CNCed stuff on it, it uses thinner sheet to shed an impressive 400g from the frame weight, the pivot is 6mm wider and itโ€™s Boosted. You still get 110mm of travel from a Monarch RT3 shock. Some very impressive bending of metal going on there, there really is. And some Renthal finishing kit. Love the Strange top cap.”
