Amanda says:

You will often see this side of a bikepacking adventure on social media, but we printed this shot over a full spread because it just made us feel so warm and fuzzy. The stars are out, the tent looks cosy and the isolation is enough to make us want to pack up and head out for the night.

Markus says:

I was really happy the image made the short list, as Jura, where the image was taken, is a really special place for me. Like no other place in Scotland it stands for my past working as a DJ, and the present mapping routes and producing stories and films.

On this trip we were in search of the boat shed that KLF used to burn a million quid, and were then attempting to cross the island from east to west, with an overnight stop somewhere higher up in the mountains. With Josh Ibbett and Philippa Battye I was joined by a brilliant team on the trip, and while not planned, a lot of the images from the ride also made it into my Bikepacking Scotland book.

Once both of them had already gone to sleep, I took some more time to enjoy the clear night, and that’s when the image was taken.

I came to Singletrack having decided there must be more to life than meetings. I like all bikes, but especially unusual ones. More than bikes, I like what bikes do. I think that they link people and places; that cycling creates a connection between us and our environment; bikes create communities; deliver freedom; bring joy; and improve fitness. They're environmentally friendly and create friendly environments. I try to write about all these things in the hope that others might discover the joy of bikes too.
