Plan For A Better Cycling Environment – Act Now!

by 0

Planning regulations are about more than if your neighbour is allowed to build that giant extension, or what sort of new windows you can fit. Cycling UK wants your help in making sure planning rules make it easier to ride your bike. Here’s what to do…

Some levelling up of this road surface required…

The Levelling Up and Regeneration Bill will be debated in parliament in the coming weeks and includes changes to our planning laws. Cycling UK and partners in the Better Planning Coalition have worked with MPs to try and improve the Bill through various amendments to make decision making more joined up, and with planning policy and decisions reflecting wider government goals, by:

  • Requiring planning authorities to incorporate walking and cycling infrastructure plans, and rights of way improvement plans, in their local development plans.
  • Requiring public authorities to publish a plan to achieve a ‘general health and wellbeing objective’, which planning authorities have to take into account when making planning decisions.
  • Ensuring planning policies set by the government and decisions taken by planning authorities are consistent with the net zero target.

This briefing explains more about these amendments, but MPs will have to support them when they’re debated in parliament on 23 and 28 November, so your help is needed. Please help Cycling UK push for pedal-powered planning by writing to your MP today using their online action and asking them to support these amendments to the Bill.
