Singletrack Unscripted – Talking About… Tyres

by and 4

Benji loves tyres, so we sat him down (among a gaggle of rowdy geese) to talk about them. If you want to know the complexities of thought that go into tyre choice, what makes a good tyre – or why one might be good sometimes and not others – then tune in here.

If you’re on the lookout for some new tyres, we feel for you. The world of mountain bike tyres is a confusing place.

Loads of different tread designs, loads of different rubber compounds, loads of different volumes, loads of different casings, loads of… stuff.

And that’s before you get into the proprietary nomenclature of the various tyre brands. EXO, Super Trail, WT, Graphene 2.0, TL Easy, Evo, MaxxGrip, MaxxTerra, SilkShield, Windshield, Greenshield Stamps… it’s all rather overwhelming.

This rubbery minefield is very probably why some people never try a new tyre. People either stick with whatever came on their bike or they just stay with the first aftermarket tyre that they plucked up the courage to have a go with (and didn’t die).

Take a few minutes to watch the video. You might learn something useful. Even if it’s only the best way to shoo a goose.

As ever, if you have any questions at all about tyres, please post away in the comments below. It’s what we’re here for.

Well, it’s what Benji’s here for anyway.

I came to Singletrack having decided there must be more to life than meetings. I like all bikes, but especially unusual ones. More than bikes, I like what bikes do. I think that they link people and places; that cycling creates a connection between us and our environment; bikes create communities; deliver freedom; bring joy; and improve fitness. They're environmentally friendly and create friendly environments. I try to write about all these things in the hope that others might discover the joy of bikes too.

Hannah and Benji didn’t discuss tyre width (normal, plus, fat) or the best rim width for a given width of tyre. I think we need another video…
