Plus equals more, and more equals better. Ergo, plus equals better. That, friends, is Science. With everyone all plus-curious these days, the flannel-loving folks from Surly have just popped into our inbox to tell us about their knobbliest 27+ rubber.
While our experience on the sort of faster 27+ tyres that bike companies love to spec has been decidedly meh (see issue 103), we have it on good authority that more aggressive treads are better-suited to slithery UK singletrack. And while Surly don’t talk much about mud in their press release, the Dirt Wizard looks certain to be better in these parts than the anything to come in under 900g distended racing rubber that seems to do so well in sunny California.
The Wizard’s ramped centre knobs are intended to keep things from dragging too much on hardpack while the combination of a new 42a-durometer rubber (with wear-reducing additives) and aggressive shoulder knobs should keep its pilot out of the path of inconveniently-placed trees. As is appropriate for the tyres’ intended use, the sidewalls have an anti-cut sidewall barrier. Designed for 50mm rims (though they’ll work on 35s in a pinch), the 3in Dirt Wizard plumps up to the same diameter as a more conservatively-shod 29er- though check clearance before plugging a set into that oh-so-2013 29in hardtail.
Surly tyres are distributed in the UK by Ison. The 27.5+ is not yet listed, but the 29+ version retails for £64.99.

Yup; I’ll have me a pair of those, thank you!
That’ll be £130 please bodgy!
Got a set of the 26″ version. It’s a good tyre.
Just fitted, I needed a 3 inch tyre that could handle deep filth, there is a rather limited choice.
They work.
