Stevie Smith, the Canadian downhill racer who passed away earlier this month following a motorcycle accident, is set to be honoured by the UCI at Fort William in June. From the UCI Mountain Bike Facebook Page:
We’ve decided to plan a memorial run in Fort William, UK, early June. Stevie’s passing away has been a shock for the Mountain Bike community and beyond. This dedicated moment will provide a fitting honour to “The Chainsaw” and will also celebrate his contribution to the MTB discipline.
Thank you Dom Wrapson for providing the initial impetus for this memorial on Pinkbike . More details will follow.
The 26 year-old died from brain injuries that occurred as the result of an enduro motorcycle crash in his hometown of Nanaimo, British Colombia. In 2013, Smith took wins at Leogang, Hafjell, and Mont-Sainte-Anne that would lead to a Downhill World Cup Overall Title for that year. Returning from injuries that had temporarily derailed his career, the Devinci rider was back on the World Cup podium as recently as this April.
In addition to the memorial run, a “Stevie Smith Legacy Fund” has been established at www.gofundme.com/23k7fus, with donations earmarked for a Tiann Smith initiative, assisting talented young athletes.
