Steel City DH is back, Saturday the 17th May hosts 2014’s Greno Woods spectacular, mountain bikings favourite big little race, not just riding the trails Steve Peat rides, but racing against him too. Last year 1500 spectators lined the side of the track showing their support for the 200 racers involved, sunshine provided some fast and dry conditions for race runs, starting with the young pincers all the way through to the world cup elites.
So are you interested?
Then get yourselves onto British Cycling’s entry page here on Friday 28th of March at 7pm, and don’t delay! Last year booked up within 3 hours, and at only £20 to enter, its one of the cheapest mountain bike races out there. You may be wondering where that £20 goes? Well the lovely organisers of the race over at ThisIsSheffield operate on a not for profit basis; all the money goes back into the mountain biking community at Greno Woods to fund further developments and repairs to the tracks.
Last year you may have seen a few people dressed up in Star Wars gear, including the legend himself. Well this year the fancy dress antics will continue; Sheffield Legends fancy dress competition is born, you can dress up as any sporting, musical or film legends from Sheffield, you could even dress up as the main man Peaty.
Stands and prizes will be there including brands such as Cotic, Santa Cruz, 5:10, Polaris, Trail Addiction and Monster. There’s also a massive £500 prize for the fastest pro; can anyone beat Peaty on his home turf? So far no one has beaten the big dog, but each year the gap to 2nd place is getting shorter and shorter.
Local favourites and long-time supporters Bradfield Brewery will be on hand to quench thirsts, Motore Cafe will be providing a lift for the discerning coffee drinkers and Drink Tea Ride Bikes will even have their very own Steel City DH blend of tea for you. If you needed more incentive to pedal harder; Whirlow Hall Farm Cafe will be providing a BBQ and Hog Roast, and Streetfood Chef will be on hand to feed you with their award winning Burritos.
Out of last year’s 200 entries a staggering 30 were women, one of the biggest women’s fields ever in UK downhill; many of them first time racers. We would love to see more women racing at this years event. So if you ever fancied giving racing a go, now is the time. For all racers either new comers or seasoned veterans Aline Coaching will be running a series of Steel City specific coached days, to enable racers to make the most of their race runs and ride with confidence. Each year the race is getting bigger and better; with one of the best race atmospheres out there, beer, coffee and burritos what isn’t to like? This is your chance to race against the best, have an awesome time with your friends, and help out the mountain biking community.
Steel City DH is set to be another incredible day, why wouldn’t you want to be there?
