Tuesday Treats 68: The Orange Tree Hotel & Freehouse

by 1

Your once a week dose of retail therapy from Singletrack’s Premier Dealers, stockists and advertisers.

Tuesday Treats gives you a quality serving of independent bike retailing and a chance to win big in this week’s prize draw.

This week, we introduce The Orange Tree Hotel & Freehouse.

This week we’re bringing you something refreshingly different. How’s about one of those amazing places that is as close as it gets to being a bike nut hangout (without the workshop)… inclusive of quality setting, a warm welcome and they serve their own beers! Stu Taylor tells us more…

We are a social hub in the town of Kirkby Lonsdale, offering riders (and non riders of course), a relaxing atmosphere to enjoy, eat and be refreshed, whether to savour one of our many superbly brewed beers with mates, our traditional pub fayre, or staying over for a night or two. You can be sure you’re among friends.

The pub is a family run affair, with Plug (the old man) Stu (the son) and Kate (the daughter) at the helm. We have been running the ship since 1996 which is pretty unusual in this day and age of increasing shutting down and reopening pubs.  We employ a young team of staff (except Elvis the bar manager), to help us keep all our customers happy.

We are known locally for our awesome burgers, fandabidosie sizzling steaks… mmmm and our wide range of beers. We serve four beers in rotation from our very own Kirkby Lonsdale Brewery and guest beers from around the country.

Now for the best bit… the riding in our area is top notch. We have we have a couple of local trails, with all types of terrain thrown in the mix. To push things forward, a short drive away we also have the Lakes and Yorkshire Dales on the doorstep.

What’s your current best-selling/hottest product?

Without a doubt our steaks and burgers fly out of the kitchen. On the bar, Kirkby Lonsdale Beers are swilled down for fun.

Which product/brand does every staff member have on their bike?

All the guys who ride with us have dropper posts (of different brands) but mainly Reverbs.

What was the last custom build you did?

The last bike I built is my current Ibis Mojo HD 160 which is without doubt the best bike I have ridden,  it amazes me how versatile it is. Without sounding cliche, it is the do-it-all bike for me… big climbs, monster descents and trail centre blasts.

Tell us something about your shop/staff that no-one knows…

We’re keenly involved over on Facebook and Twitter. Everyone knows everything about everyone here, it’s one of the joys of living in a small town. Or do they!!!? A couple of snippets… we were Westmorland Camra Pub of the Year 2011 and are in the process of creating a new bicycle storage area for hotel guests, to further cement our MTB friendliness. We have some rather famous fans, including this chap…

Lastly, remind us. What do Singletrack Premier Subscribers get from you guys?
