British Cycling, alongside Bike Envy, PORC, Ana Nichoola Clothing and MuleBar are bringing back Women On Wheels (WOW).
In the 90’s these weekends were a hotbed of burgeoning talent, as well as giving gals the opportunity to hang out with other women bikers and try their hands at mountain bike racing in an informal environment. “What a great idea” we thought, and we had loads of fun!
So, for one weekend in October 2010, WOW is back and we are bringing the concept bang up to date.
Saturday will be skills based and you can choose from beginner or intermediate sessions, each run by a British Cycling coach. There will also be opportunities to browse through Ana Nichoola’s amazing clothes, have a coffee or tea and slice of cake (of course!), take a bike mechanics course, or just ride around the trails at PORC (Penshurst Outdoor Recreation Centre). The culmination of this exhausting day will be a barbeque, next to the PORC pond downhill course.
After a delicious breakfast on Sunday morning the weekend will really hot up. You can take part in some short course XC and DH racing on the PORC trails. You don’t have to be the best – it’s about trying out what you have learned over the weekend and, of course, cheering on all the other girls. There will be prizes for the winners, as well as spot prizes for best crash etc…
A pub lunch will follow, then a long ride back for those still with energy to burn. Finally there will be an awards ceremony back at PORC where we will reward the winners of the racing and the Bike Envy prize draw.. But, of course, it’s not really about the prizes! Ultimately this is about women getting together and sharing a love of off-road bike riding whatever their background.
Dates:
23rd-24th October
Sign up for the event before the 30th September and receive a free goodie bag!
The cost for the weekend is £80 to include camping, lunch and evening meal on Saturday, followed by breakfast, plus a main course and a soft drink in the pub on Sunday.
