  • XT rear hubs with loose locknuts?

In my small and humble shop I have now had 4 of this year's XT hubs brought in with loose locknuts over the bearing cones, usually the cassette side. At first I thought it may be down to some full suss designs allowing a bit too much flex at the rear dropouts but the last one was a Boardman hardtail. If the bearing cone becomes overtight there's the potential for some quite expensive damage to be done.

Is this problem endemic to XT rear hubs?
Has anyone else seen it happen?
If you've got one have you checked your's recently?

I bought some wheels built up with old XT six bolt hubs, and after a few rides I noticed the wheels wobbling about in the frame – locknuts were loose. I have read of others with similar problems and I think they may be prone to it.

I've seen this happen on lots of Shimano hubs over the years. These days i automatically strip Shimano hubs from new, fill them with decent grease and readjust. Even Deores last for years if you do this.

I've had my XT rear tighten up (ie. over tight cone, loose locknut).

Fixed by using some proper tools and a bit of muscle on the re-assembly 🙂
