Anyone see that clown on the mobility scooter trundle across the road just as the peloton was bearing down? 😯
Peloton missed by inches it looked like, could have been extremely nasty & the Daily Heil would be in its element – pensioner mown down by cyclists!

Did see that, shocking, but if you ever have a go at marshalling, trying to get the general public to comply and just wait is not the easiest thing, it appears there is a growing number of self obsessed, impatient and rude people.

I can imagine! There didn’t seem to be that many marshals to be truthful & it appeared that the roads were only closed at the last minute – several times i saw cars roll up to junctions as the peloton was passing.

Rolling road closures are an effective way of a more sterile racing environment, far better than how most road races go off in the lower ranks. Be nice to close the roads completely but as Ride London showed, it soon causes the nimbys to go into melt down. Be interesting to see how the Tour gets on in this country later on in the year.

I’d imagine they’re using rolling road closures. No point in closing the whole stage when the race is through in no time.

I assume someone (a Southern Downs here for here maybe) is going to huck the peloton at some point???

The TdF is a different proposition though, far bigger race & far far more spectators – although i do hope the women’s Tour of Britain really takes off & the spectator numbers grow.

A few of us watched it come through Leicester, and all in all the marshalling and Police rolling road blocks were very impressive and well versed.

Must have been 100+ motorbikes all playing relay racing with one another to keep the roads flowing but safe at the right moment.

Hopefully the womens cycling events will get the revenue and media space they deserve as most at elite level are training just as hard as the men albeit without the financial backing to give them that ultimate scientific edge etc.

They certainly deserve a bigger slice of the financial pie.

I was impressed with the speed of the peleton – I suspect that they would leave us gasping for breath and coming in just a ‘few’ minutes behind them.

You cannot marshal all the course, look the TdF where crashes with the public are normal.

No suspicion required, stage one was completed at an average of 23mph iirc

They weren’t hanging about were they? How many of us could hold that pace i wonder? Not me, i can average 18.5mph over a 30 mile route, 24mph average is way beyond my capabilities.

The rolling closure when the men’s Tour came through our village in 2012 was amazing.

Some **** tried to edge out of side road past a civilian escort motorbike, and suddenly found himself swamped by four Police motorbikes with the blues and twos going. He very sheepishly backed off.

I had to marshall a parade a couple of weeks ago – I found being polite and smiley and stressing that it was only 5-10 minutes stopped any aggro. Another marshall always has issues but I suspect he goes looking for them

And I think the womens tour this year is equal to the mens ToB for prize money?

I don’t get that, the race route is advertised way in advance, the road is closed for 15 minutes tops & you still get some retarded cretin trying to put everyone on danger.

Pretty tough conditions too. Pity it’s not a ToB tho.

Aye, would be nice to see it across the country.

A car attempted to reverse into the road 50 yards before the hill climb finish today after the rolling road block was already in effect, queue motorbike copper stopping suddenly and getting all shouty.

Apparantly a traffic incident further on held up the race for a bit.
