[#9305567]

when it comes to making comments on the forum?

I mean, what subjects do you actually have real knowledge of that you can offer to people when they come up in conversation?

I am not talking about opinions here, but areas with which you have familiarity based on extensive experience or education.

And because most of us, when we think about it, will have different 'levels' of expertise, I suggest we list things in terms of Primary, Secondary, and Additional.

I'll start.

Primary
Late classical and early medieval thought (theology & philosophy)
Christianity (theology & history)
Languages (ancient & select modern)
Education (Sixth Form & University; Progression)

Secondary
Psychology & Counselling
Relationships & Children

Additional
Canada
West Indies
Ice Hockey

So share a list, with as many items as you think are true about you, and let's make a bank of forum expertise! 8)

I seem to be able to close a thread....

Other than that, I'm pretty knowledgeable on most things Liverpool related. Maybe a bit of town planning. And cat ownership, being that I have a few siamese.

Snarky one liners and questionable puns.

Wilful misinterpretation of comments for my own amusement.

Perpetuation of funny shoe / baby robin / Joe Cocker type memes.

Are you saying I didn't give a serious answer to your question?

I challenge you to trawl through my posts and find something which doesn't fit in with the catergories I described and instead offers true expertise or insight.

I may be a lightweight buffoon but a lack of self awareness is not one of my many faults.

Edit - also arguing with Binners about pies.

I know a bit about computers.

I struggle with this sort of question because I know "enough to get by" about many things, rather than really ever specialising. If I was listing tertiary knowledge I'd be here all day.

(I know that the word you were looking for instead of "additional" is "tertiary" for instance.)

Okay, Saxon, I'll take the bait:

Primary

Green woodwork and pole lathe turning
Trees/Arboriculture/hedge laying.
West Dorset
Yurts

Secondary

Family/relationships
Only child-ness
Cooking
Mucking about on bikes
Getting pissed/hangovers

[s]Additional[/s] Tertiary

Converted commercial campervans
The Smiths

Listed like that it is a bit depressing actually. I'm not quite as useful, informed, educated or interesting as I had previously thought.

I'm good at looking things up on the internet. I mean, really, really good. Black belt Google-fu.

Microsoft stuff (apart from how to use Office) as that's my job.

Not bad on pro cycling.

This is one of those tricky questions, because my only formal qualification is in Astrophysics. But that was over 20 years ago, so don't expect me to remember much of it.

Bikes. I know about building bikes. Though not MTB stuff. Or road bike stuff. So, erm, weird bikes. I know about them. And photography. And the industrial heritage of the West of Scotland. And I know the script of the West Wing off by heart.

But that won't stop me pontificating about stuff I know nothing about, of course. That's what the internet is for.

My main area of expertise (enough to get me by) is probably CNC machining/engineering. I also like thinking of things to make/design based around what I can machine - a couple of bikes (one still in progress), lots of LED lights (even got joint highest score in a WMTB megatest with my 1st effort)

Also have a degree in rocket surgery ๐Ÿ˜†

Perchy's reference to Commando reminds me that I should have mentioned GI Joe comics.

I suspect you didn't get these over here, but my friend - who saw the first movie with me - couldn't believe my disappointment over the studio's clumsy juxtaposition of a few issues I was able to name.

Yep. The early medieval computus and GI Joe Issue #27. That's me.

Jobwise, i know a bit about Chemistry, specifically the cleaning and Personal Care / Suncare industry

I've successfully raised 2 kids to the ages of 11 and 13 so I'm happy to offer experience tips, suffixed by a YMMV

My dad is/was an engineer so have had bikes in bits since I was a kid so relatively au fait with the workings of 'old skool' stuff like gears, etc. Less so with suspension trickery.

Love 'proper' maths - real adding up and division stuff as opposed to abstact concepts like sqrt (-1) = j and so on. So I love it when someone combines the two and says 'but won't I spin out on 30:11 as a top gear' and I can calculate their speed in mm/hour to 8 decimal places to prove that if they do they'll probably shit themselves with fear first.

Used to referee soccer at local level and still keep up to date with the Laws and more importantly the IBD's, hence understand the decisions made by officials better than about 95% of players, pundits or fans.

Reasonably up to date with cricket knowledge although that rapidly drops off now below international level.

Ermm...... I can do a mean gas barbecue.

I've been masquerading as a policeman since I joined the forum 12 years ago, and nobody's rumbled me yet. So I guess I'm an expert at reading Wikipedia then winging it on the subject of the law.

You're assuming that anyone thinks that police officers would know about the law.

A guy in Canada once asked me if I was a sponsored snowboarder*.
This must mean I'm probably the most knowledgeable person I know when it comes to snow and snow based activities.

*This had nothing to do with my skillz, I was in the bus station in Vancouver and had the same snowboard bag as my brother in law, so he assumed we were sponsered!!
