Best band/performer and gigs – every time I’ve ever seen Talking Heads and more recently David Byrne on his own.

Best gig of last 12 months – amazingly the octogenerian Orquestra Buena Vista Social Club at WOMAD this summer – amazing because at this late stage in their lives, and with so much behind them, you’d never have guessed they could still have such edge.

Single (ever) – oh my god, tomorrow it might be different, but tonight it’s ‘Ain’t Nobody’ by Rufus and Chakka Khan.

Album (ever) – the same applies, but tonight it’s ‘Kind of Blue’ by Miles Davis.

    Single – therapy? / screamager

to answer emsz – no, the last 30 years worth of gigs haven’t been sh*te++, just that was the best one I can recall in terms of (a) line up (b) performance by all the bands and (c) the mates I was with.

The last gig* I went to was pretty good too, and that was only 4 months ago. Bet you can’t guess which band it was…

++ other than The Sisters Of Mercy at Leeds O2 a couple of years ago. that was pretty poor. big old uni reunion kind of made up for that one though!

    * by a band other than my own 😉

saw Play Dead a few times too., they were well good

I sort of feel sorry for people who’ve not been to decent gig since before I was born….

It’s 10 years since I saw my best show, but that doesn’t mean I’ve not seen a hell of a lot of great shows since. Only one can be the best, is all.

    Band: Pavement (consistently great records).

Album: Gentlemen by The Afghan Whigs.
Relationship Of Command by At The Drive-in has to get a mention because it’s the greatest production I’ve ever heard. All hail Ross Robinson.

Single: The Rat by The Walkmen

Gig: Six By Seven at King Tut’s (2001). Rival Schools at King Tut’s is a close second.

Band – Wedding Present (on the basis if I could only listen to one band for the rest of time it’d be them. They’re not technically the best, or have the best songs, but I couldn’t live without knowing I could dig out one of their albums to play)
    Album – Hatful of Hollow
Single – Birthday by the Sugarcubes
    Gig – Pixies at N’cle Uni, 1989
