This is very cool – stick a new ratchet in the shifter, suddenly you’re 11 speed, no new mech or shifter needed.

Found: Internal hack to convert SRAM MTB 10 speed to 11, without replacing shifter or rear derailleur

    George,

Looks very interesting. I have book marked the page. If it works it would be outstanding so might be worth a go.

I like hacks, but I’m not sure what people would do with this.

So what version of 11sp would people want to add this to?
You’d want 10-42 really (which means expensive cassette and new freehub).
Then you’d only really get good shifting with a dedicated 11sp rear mech.

So you’ve saved the price of a shifter (GX is £27.99)

I guess it’s more for people who want 2×11 with 11-40.

Plenty of folks using regular 10s SRAM mechs with 42t expanders – this would allow them to use 11-42 Shimano cassettes, or 10-42 SRAM cassettes. Shifting maybe not as good as proper 11 speed, but the 10s SRAM stuff generally works fine with expanders, with no RAD cage, longer B-screw or other miodifications needed.

Basically it’s full 11 speed, but you only pay for a new cassette and the wee ratchet (plus XD freehub if you go SRAM cassette)

    …and an 11sp chain.

Once you’ve bought the cassette, chain and this device you are only £70 short of a full XT 1×11 setup (price of mech and shifter minus this device).

I know that’s still £70, but I’m just not sure that many will bother.
