    Riksbar – nice video!

While we’re on Sea Furies, its worth a picture of

Bristol Centaurus… 53 litres, and about 2500hp as fitted to the Sea Fury. Developed up to 3200hp in a trial fuel injected form.

The Centaurus is an insane engine, see this video for how the sleeve valves work and think of all that up & down and round & round motion at high rpm 😯

Personally, I’m awestruck every time I see one of these monsters keeping itself in the sky…

while in isolation those power figures seem impressive, the BMW M12 as fitted to various F1 and F2 cars was doing about 850-900hp from a turbo charged 1.5ltrs engine…

That Bristol must have been pretty unstressed…

I’d be very stressed having to rely on a BMW F1 engine…. (credit where it’s due squeezing so much out of 1.5 is impressive)

Edit… while on the subject of test pilots… there was a desert island discs recently with Chris Hadfield talking about some of his experiences as a test pilot before becoming a Shuttle commander. Worth a listen.
