  • Superstar, hope, DT…. Which hub is easiest to service???

    Hello

    Looking for a new disc wheelset for my commuter, but which brand has the easiest rear hub to overhaul….. Saw dt tools for the rearhub was in the area of 200 euro !!!!

    Bit tempted at going for a cheaper superstar components wheelset, but how about spares, and service of rearhub?

    You can get the tools for DT Swiss hubs considerably cheaper than that.
    E.g.

    DT Swiss 240s are very easy to work on except for the inner rear bearing, when you definitely need the ring nut tool.
    General servicing of the star ratchet system is very simple and easy without any specialist tools.

    Hopes are also very easy to work on and the tools are cheaper.

    My only knowledge of Superstar hubs is via a friend who had his rear freehub expire and was told that there were no spares available for the hub as it had been superseded.

    Superstar hubs are similar to Hope in the ease of servicing but I broke the axel in a rear Tesla hub and can’t get a replacement as the hub design has changed, also I bought a replacement freehub for another superstar hub and it took a bit of fettling to make it run right.
    I think it’ll be DT Swiss hubs from now on

    Dare I suggest shimano?

    Will last forever if properly looked after, spares are cheap and £10 worth of cone spanners are the only tools required. (OK and a bigg-ass hex key for freehub replacement)

    Other than that Hope only need a hammer and set of bearing drifts (sockets if you’re doing it on the cheap) and spares cheap enough and readily available.

    As above, DT very easy to work on and look after unless you need to get at that one bearing, in which case tools or shop required.

    Chris King can all be looked after with no tools other than an allen key until you want to do a proper service and get the gubbins out, then £££ for tools.

    Novatec/Superstar are basically like hopes, but with more uncertainty about which spare part you actually need and availability although not too bad if you knwo where to look.

    Superinformative…………. I might stick with DT, as i have some wheels with 350 hubs 🙂
