I’ve now got grand ideas of a camping+biking trip to mid Wales. It works a treat 🙂 Strong winds today, and its not really noticeable at speed (like riding a light motorbike on motorway). At slow speeds, its a little wobbly, but nothing I wont get used to. Its a very solid mount, only thing I’m worried about is the possible insurance implications? Is it any different to a roof rack on a car? Its not a permanent mod. Also numberplate is slightly obscured, but is visible.

That’s a load of odd forces on the rear subframe. Seen it done before though. I think you probably need a tail marker as it extends quite a way beyond the back of the bike.

If it were me then I would be trying to get the centre of mass as far forward as possible. I would therefore remove both wheels and strap them either side of the forks at the front, and frame at the back, aka:

I will resist the urge to point out that your BMW has the cylinders pointing in the wrong directions 😆

The 1200GS was too big/heavy and expensive for me! I didnt feel the need for shaft drive as I’m not doing big miles. Not much gain for the extra £3k expense IMO. The front wheel is in a mount that the carrier provides. I wouldnt want to move the front wheel. I could remove the rear and bungee it to the other side, but I’m not convinced I will benefit much, except the possibility of not having an overhanging load >1m : http://assets.highways.gov.uk/specialist-information/abnormal-loads-industry-guidelines/A_brief_guide_to_overhanging_loads.pdf

I am waiting for a load strap to arrive from 2×2 as that and an additional tail light were missing from the package (annoyingly I expect I’ll have to pay duty/admin fee again) – fkn hate it when parts are missing 👿
The strap will pull the bars and therefore the rear weight forward. It straps bars to rear footpegs.

Sorry, no pictures but back in the late eighties when I didn’t have a car I towed my road bike from Winchester to Swanage for the triathlon behind my Honda CB250RS. Front wheel bungeed to the side of the bike and handlebars strapped tightly to the rack on the back of the motorbike. By rights I probably should have had a number board and lights but the copper I passed didn’t pull me.
