Can't budge the seat post on my Whyte 46.
Tried WD40,clamping the post in the vice and trying to free by moving the frame.
Any other tricks of the trade that I can try.?
Thought about boiling water on the downtube, then trying again.

Is it a aluminium frame and steel post? And how long have they been in said position?

Try Plusgas - it's a specialist dismantling lube that breaks down corrosion. It's worked for me before.

The things that spring to mind are -
Remove bottom bracket and if possible spray Plusgas up the inside of the seatpost tube and leave the frame upside down to allow it to penetrate from within.

If the seatpost is one you can access the inside of when the seat is removed, get some plumbers freeze spray and spray it inside the seatpost to contract it.

Heat the seatpost tube with a hot air gun, it will warm quicker than the seatpost.

Combine all 3.

A mate had this problem with a scandium frame and it took 3 of us about an hour to get the post out.

Caustic soda worked for me where all else failed, obviously didn't end up with much of a seat post.

(alu post in steel frame by the way!)

Get some curved soft jaws for your vice so you don't damage your seat post and then clamp as hard as possible. I used some masking tape on an old post to avoid damage.

Is it resting against a frame sticky-out-bit, bottle cage bolt etc? If not, I had success after all else failed by taking off the saddle and hammering one downwards into the frame with a lump hammer. You can put a huge blow on it this way, to shock/break it loose, then once it's shifting pull it back out. Fatal for the post though and all in all a bit worrying and last resort.

Is your frame the carbon version or the ally one?

If its the carbon one, you should be able to get a decent sized hammer and just smash the carbon away from the seat post.

The ally ones a bit tougher but if you're very careful with a hacksaw then you can cut a slot down the seat tube and prise it oper to release the post. Bit of a hassle though, probably only worth doing if its a decent seatpost (Thomson) that you want to keep.

Get the frozen peas out of the freezer and pack around the post then leave for 10 mins. Job done.

Your peas will still be frozen, your tea will be late and your seat post will still be stuck in your frame. Shite job.

You need to time it right so you can boil up the peas after and eat them with some fishfingers

An old carbon dioxide fire extinguisher (or liquid nitrogen) can be used on a metal seat post to cool it down, to shrink it, then put the seat post in a vice and twist and pull the frame.

Or Loctite freeze and release http://www.loctitefreezeandrelease.com/
or any of the many other similar products: Ambersil Rust Flash, Wurth Rostoff Ice, CRC freeze-off

Sol-X freeze ease etc etc

Or dynamite, might or might not work.

Friend of mine had a stuck seat post in a MK 1 Heckler. After trying pretty much everything listed above, we sent the frame to Argos Racing Cycles and they did a fantastic job of reaming the old seatpost out. Cost a few quid but saved the frame. Same size seat post fits just as it used to.

Try pouring hot water on the frame tube only, see if that can expand it enough to get some movement.
Or the opposite, cool the seatpost with ice.

I had a stuck seatpost once - tried all the methods listed above. In the end, had to saw the seatpost from the inside and then crush it before pulling it out

repeated applications of Plusgas or similar will probably do it but you need patience.

If you want a result today....cut the post near the seat tube and then cut sections down into the post from the inside with a hacksaw blade being careful not to cut into the seat tube. Once you have two sections cut right down and right through the post try getting a screwdriver blade behind the cut out section and levering it out. It might then need another full cut down the length of the inside of the post but you should be able to fold it in on itself and remove.

It does work but you have to persist.

FOUR OR FIVE HOURS OF FUN!
