I know where you're going with this but it's extremely annoying to have to delete it every time you make a quote. Maybe you're specifically trying to annoy Junkyard, but the rest of us use

too. Just not five times per post.

I have to admit it's an interesting trick, one I've not seen anywhere before.

I'm confused; what's going on here today. Annoyingly I had to work, so can someone summarise these changes, please?

Hey STW, instead of spending time working on this which I doubt anybody actually wants, how about fixing multi-quoting instead?

I have not even noticed [ and I dont know how to do whatever it is that you are doing] Perhaps they wanted to wind up an easily agitated angsty middle class IT type ,the type who may even start a thread on it ?

It seems if you set up a quote, and copy and paste someones text into the box, it automagically adds a "See more at" link.

Very odd....

Funny, That's what I'm using here (Version 31.0.1650.57 m)

I pressed the "Quote" button twice, copied the whole of someones post (Where they haven't quoted anything themselves), pasted it between the [ quote ] [ / quote] bits and off it went...

What the hell's that for?

I work in IT and sometimes our developers have silly ideas...I think that's one of them.

Despite what Aracer wrote, it was available as a button on BM forum quotes some years ago - it enabled you to see a quote in the context of the entire post and not just what the person quoting wanted you to see.

I think...

It's a bloody nuisance, to put it bluntly. There's no need for a link to a quote in the same thread, and I'm not even sure there's that much of a need for it anyway; how often do people quote things from other threads, or from STW into other fora? Having to phaff around selecting the link to the delete it is really over-complicating what should be a simple, un-complicated procedure.
Sorry if this annoys the IT bods, but I've had to do it once tonight, and it made me pretty cross, adding extra time and complexity to doing a simple c'n'p.
Oh, and to put it into context, in the ten years I've been posting on this forum, there has never, ever, been an occasion that I've thought that I needed this facility.

Thankfully, the Quote tool that is part of the STW Chrome Add-in still works without any of this hassle.

WHY DIDN'T I KNOW THERE WAS A STW CHROME ADD-IN?

I get it too:

There's no need for a link to a quote in the same thread, and I'm not even sure there's that much of a need for it anyway - See more at: http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/see-more-at-forum-content#sthash.RhtVNfzZ.dpuf

I think it might be more useful if the quotes text was a hyperlink:

There's no need for a link to a quote in the same thread, and I'm not even sure there's that much of a need for it anyway

Or, better, a clickable speechmark or something:

"There's no need for a link to a quote in the same thread, and I'm not even sure there's that much of a need for it anyway"

Yeah, that is a deficiency which I've thought about. Not very much admittedly 🙂

I did have a prototype working of a "hover over main page thread titles" feature which displayed a popup of the first few sentences of the initial post in the thread being hovered over.

Now that is also something I've often thought is missing from here (which I'm used to having on other forums). Being a software geek I shall have a look at the code (web stuff isn't really my thing, but it would be good for me to learn more). It would be cool if the forum could be made to have the functionality most other forums do (but they claim we wouldn't like) - unfortunately I don't think it's possible to fix the nested quote issue externally.

It wasn't too difficult to retrieve the data from each thread, the hard bit was getting the popups to appear/disappear nicely as the mouse moved down the thread list. I may revisit it and have another pop.

The extension uses JQuery so have a read of some tutorials. It's pretty easy to pick up if you're used to OO techniques and are familiar with Java / Javascript.

Cool ta.. busy with work though so can't promise much.

Now, who's going to write a mobile app that pushes updates on the threads you're involved with...?

allthepies - I'm looking at the source, and think I can see what's going on, but how do I install from source in order to test any changes? (sorry, I'm sure it seems obvious, but as I said not my area)

First I knew of the STW Chrome extension, not sure it'll work with ChromeOS, but at least I have a nice singletrack logo by the address bar. 😀 Thanks!

Edit - no, doesn't work. No signature automatically added. I'll have to do it manually.

Rachel.

Hmm, odd. Not got access to a Chromebook at the mo but will soon. I'll investigate then. I guess you checked the "Add signature to posts?" option ?
