Thinking about using the hardtail for road use but don’t want to use a full-on slick as country lanes can be quite muddy.

Would I be better off going for a 1.8 width?

Any recommendations, perhaps something that is slightly knobbly?

As always, thank you so much.

1.4 Michelin City tyres are fine for mud on tarmac lanes due to a relatively deep grooved pattern. For something a bit wider there’s the Schwalbe Road cruiser in 1.75″ flavour. If you really want the mental crutch of an offroad tread then Michelin XC Dry’s may fit the bill. Both can be found under £10 from the usual online sources.

Look for hybrid tyres. Schwalbe black jack and Continental traffic are designed for road use but also suitable to light offroad.

Conti do some 26″ touring tyres that are wider and tough, and ride well too.

Tread will not help with grip where there is a smear of mud on top of tarmac.

    Thanks very much for replies.

One thing I forgot to mention was ease of removing tyre so are there any that should be avoided due to DT Swiss rims?

    Thanks again.
