Bit random this one! Can anyone recommend somewhere to buy a rabbit hutch thats a bit better quality than the usual balsa wood offerings from the high street stores?

Rabbits are intelligent, inquisitive social animals. They are prey animals who need to be able to run and they get stressed when captive in confined spaces. Rabbits who are kept in a small box in the garden or garage and who just get a few minutes socialising each day when someone comes along to throw a handful of food at them tend to become depressed and aggressive.

If you want a rabbit, let it live in the house. They are clean and will use a litter tray, just be aware they will chew cables and their inquisitive nature means they will run out of open doors!

But please don’t put one in a hutch.

Last one we had was from pets at home, that was good as shop bought ones go. Best one by far was made by me from a repurposed real wood chest of drawers. Bottom drawer was the sleeping area, which still slid out for easy cleaning. Upstairs was the run.

Ours do sleep in a hutch (double height from pets at home with staggeringly ugly picture on it) but they’re free 18 hours a day and usually go to bed happily when it’s my bed time).

Hutch in garden for a secure place to rest/sleep, include a large ‘run’ ideally the whole garden, just need to make it escape proof, or they’ll be out eating next doors flower borders;).
We also turned an old shed into part hutch, cat flap access and some DIY, all good fun, but as said above let them run around and keep your grass down!

Escape proof and buzzard proof round here are the two requirements.

+1 Boris, I’d have another indoor bunny in a shot. Our last one didn’t chew cables luckily. He lived 13.5 years and acted more like a cat ,chasing stuff round the room and then flopping out on your lap.

Work colleague has an amazing setup which is a smallish garden shed for their sole use inside of which is a platform and further enclosed space they can get to and all the rabbit feed etc stored out of their reach stored above. There is then a hole cut in the wall and a 15-20ft flexible pipe attached (like a robust and larger version of the sort of thing you attach to a tumble dryer. At the other end of the hose is a run that can be moved to most parts of the garden. Run is mostly mesh but with one solid wall and partial covered roof to provide shade from sun and rain. The incumbents seem a happy bunch.

Thanks guys. We have two rabbits as know they are social animals, the hutch would be for sleeping purposes and somewhere to get out of the weather/shade if they so wish. They have the run of the garden which is very secure, has places for them to hide etc and a large section of grass. We’ve got them inside at the moment but thought they may prefer it outside during the warmer months?
