So, my K-Edge Di2 rear mech turned up the other day.

[IMG] [/IMG]

Whats interesting is they remove all traces of Shimano branding from the mech, including grinding off the logos on the jockey wheels. And fit it with a lovely cage....

Weights to follow, be interesting to see how much difference there is between this and the standard one

the Red ruins the pikey/rat look IMO.
Was it more expensive than the shimano one?

Presume this is K-edge turning Di2 into a mtb mech?

I doubt Shimano have licensed them to do so, which would explain. I wonder how long they will get away with it.

I'm basing the build on this..

[img] [/img]

I'm naming the bike Deceptacon

EDIT: Thats what I wondered Al - they don't actually provide the rear mech any more, you have to send it to them and they convert it. Works though, and the button action is 8)

I really like the idea, but my £60 X.9 rear mech just lasted 4 rides and I was annoyed, wasn't even a bent cage, the rock hit it upwards an distorted the parralelogram/b-knuckle so it wouldn't shift. I can't even begin to comprehend how I'd justify hanging a Di2 mech off my MTB! There'd have to be a ban on taking anything other than pancake smooth right hand corners!

It does look very cool though!

Was it more expensive than the shimano one?

About $500 more according to the pricelist on bikerumour!

**** me, this is going to be one ell'-of-a-build.

keep this updated, unless I have missed an older post.

Whats the rest of the build, and is there a uk address for k-edge or did the mech have to go to the US?

Nope, this is the first proper post about it - it should actually be completed shortly, going on a Niner Air Carbon with niner fork, Enve finishing kit, Tune cranks and hubs (Njee will HATE that 😉 ) It's been done by the blokes at Lifecycle, the rear mech was sent off to the US along with the wiring and shizzle, they then convert it to the button/trigger shift and send it back.

Fair play. Really interested in what you make of the Clegs... a real world report...

If you havent already got the cranks, check out the tune's new project/ brand BOR. Their cranks and rings are a work of art.

Ridged or sus fork?

I've actually got the BOR cranks to go on it, they have lovely little trees etched onto them which makes me very happy!

Brakes are an interesting one. Originally they were going to be the Brakeforce One jobs, but apparently they're a bugger to get working properly so we swopped to the Cleg's. There isn't a huge difference in weight and they should stand a bit more stick - fingers crossed!

Rigid fork in the front, Niner with black on black to match the frame.

Negative! It was a local company that Rob at Lifecycles got in contact with. He's had quite a few done recently, including some for Corima wheels and these for my mates BMC (that now has a saddle).

[IMG] [/IMG]

Give him a ring for costs as I've not had much input into them

'normal' bikes not doing it for you anymore flange? 😉

Awesome ideas, 10 or 11 speed? How many rings up front? Whats the intended use, superlight mtb or mega posh commuter?
Can't wait to see this! In the absence of pics, care to tease me with a full spec list?

And tell your mate to sort his pointing out...

That's character is that Thomas! A proper Suffolk wall if ever there was one...

This will be 10-speed, as per the current Di2. It'll be run on a dual ring set up at the front, although to be fair I've been riding 1x10 for over a year so quite how much use the granny ring will see remains to be seen. The whole lot is going on a Niner Air carbon frame and fork, with the goal being a super light race bike for me to do the nationals on (which is a bit of joke considering how rubbish I am!).

The idea behind it (and I'm getting a pretty good deal on most parts) is that its a showcase for my mates shop. He does a lot of high end road builds (I think one of them recently came in at £17k) but people tend not to spend quite as much on MTB's. This hung in the shop should hopefully entice people into spending a bit more on the MTB's. The spec list is as follows

Niner Air Carbon RDO frame and fork
Enve riser bar, stem and seat post
Enve 29'er rims built onto Tune Prince/Princess hubs, custom graphics
Tune Smartfoot Cranks (Not BOR, but apparently they're the same ones)
Tune BB
K-Edge Di2 10 speed, XTR cassette,
Cleg brakes
No idea on saddle yet, probably a Gobi

Top end road bikes are always more than top end MTBs.

You'll struggle to spend £2500 on MTB wheels, you can do double that on the road.

Can I suggest a custom Saevid saddle? Super light and blingy.

A mate has those BOR/Tune cranks - the drive side pedal hit the end of the crank thread before the pedal was flush against the crank. Result - a nice gap between the pedal axle flange and the crank. Quality....

YoKaiser - loving those, I think we might have a winner! Have emailed the link to the shop, nice one!

Gee - we've checked that and everything seems pretty spot on. And they have trees etched on them! Trees! How can that not be cool!

£17k would be fairly easy to rinse on a road bike, as Njee says wheels are pretty expensive compared to MTB - a set of RZR's will set you back £4.5k, a Storck 0.6 Fascenario frameset is £7k and there are plenty more expensive ones out there. MTB is a cheap option compared to roadie stuff....

I can see it is easily doable, and granted spend plenty of money on bikes.

But 17k?? Not sure I would dare ride the bloody thing

Having thought about this for five seconds, there are folk I work with who spend upwards of 50k on a car which is madness.

17k on a bike seems a bargain suddenly!

I chucked 10k at a roadie 14mths ago, it's not leaving my side for another, well, 5yrs at least. All I'll do is replace stuff as it wears out, frame fits like a glove (handbuilt) all the hanging bits can be changed.
Niner Air Carbon..

"drools"

thats mad money, would you not want to kill yourself if you were taken to the cleaners by someone on a much cheaper bike?

i probably would.

It's all relative, innit?

If you had £17k "spare" to purchase a bike, statistically I reckon there would be a £80k motor on the drive.

Right now I think it's a lot of money to splash out on two wheels - but ask me again when I'm minted - and I'll have a different answer (most likely).

Unless you're the fastest in the world ever... there's always going to be someone faster, and probably on a cheaper bike.

Who cares, just ride the best kit you can afford and enjoy it!

and if you get left, train harder!

It's fair to say I'll have it handed to me on a regular basis. But as mentioned, it's all relative. Some of my mates spend thousands on fishing gear, one chap I know races an M3 and that runs into tens of thousands a year. And he never wins. To me, cycling is more important that say going out getting hammered every weekend. Or having a really flash TV or audio equipment.

I don't have any other proper hobbies (riding my motorbike isn't really a hobby) so all my money goes into cycling.

The bloke with the three Storcks owns an aviation company, has numerous fast cars and motorbikes and has recently got into cycling. The last time I saw his £12k 0.7, it was in having the hubs rebuilt after he rode it through a river to wash it off after a rainy sportif. If you've got money to burn and like nice stuff, why not have the best?

That's what we like to hear - spend what you like on a bike, just don't baby it and use it properly..

Look fwd to seeing what you build up here. Not my style but I love extreme examples of bikes and this has plenty of potential. The car inspiration, well I doubt any bike will be that cool, but I like it and the aspiration is bold! The name of the bike? Pure bike-nerd style, top marks! )

It does all seem a bit mad, spending so much, until you think about it a bit....

...I was watching the Dauphine last night on TV and every single road bike in that peleton would cost upwards of £10k, and they are pretty much throw away items! (admittedly they haven't paid for them). Also, I went to watch the Tour a few seasons ago and saw the finish of the Etape - there were bloody thousands of bikes in the £10k+ range, all ridden by "ordinary" roadies.....there's loads of cash out there, just sadly not in my pocket!

Good luck with the build - looks fab - and I'm looking forward to reading all about it 😀

Amen.

I'm waiting for my very expensive carbon MTB to arrive. I'll ride it 2-3 times most weeks for the next few years so I'd consider it great VFM.

Compared to my brother who has done a few stage rallies as a navigator with a mate..
Very cheap rallycar (Legacy Turbo) £5000ish plus many garage hours
Entry fee for rally £800 each
Fuel, helmet, suits etc etc.
Gets used around 3 days a year - 1 local rally and a few gravel sprints. Last snowman rally they went into a huuuge snowbank (along with around half the field!) on stage 1. £800 down the drain.

Flange - does your shop deal with K-Edge or did you go direct.

As I would like one of the custom band-on front mech mounts they make for MTB di2 as it shifts the road mech over a few mm's - so would be perfect for using a normal road front mech on a monstercross type bike.

The shop I use deals with K-Edge direct. Give Rob, Matt or Stu a call at Lifecycles Bildeston and they can sort you out.

Don't work for Niner/Jungle, just wanted something nicer than what I race on now.

Pics to follow, word is its now complete...
