Booked a trip for three persons to Moab for the last week in October & planning on using the shuttles rather than a guide. Can anyone suggest a riding intinerary for 7 days so I can book suttles, thought of doing Slickrock on the first day with the Whole Enchilada near the end of the week with Porcupine Rim & Captain Ahab thrwn in. Any other must do’s to fill in the rest of the days?

As we land in Denver at 18.00 we thought of staying somewhere along the route to Moab the first night & do a ride the following day, Grand Junction or Fruita look a good bet, any suggestions for a trail near there?

I also have the Moab Rustic Inn booked but all thcheaper accomodation seem to have 2 x doubles, not ideal for 3 x burly Northerners, any accomadation suggestions also welcomed.

    Thanking you all in advance.

Definitely ride at Fruita- if you pop into On The Edge bike shop they will sort you out with a guidebook and tell you which trails are in condition. Will you be there for the Ho Down?

Check out kokopelli lodges, quite new self catering hut/lodge things. Also, I wouldn’t do porcupine time separate from the whole enchilada, do the whole thing twice, it’s awesome! If you want an easier/rest day the trails at Moab brands are easy going to potter on. Top of the enchilada can be pretty cold first thing in the morning too.

Also, burger and shake at Milt’s after the slickrock and a quesadilla at the takeaway place off the main street (you’ll see it) after the whole enchilada is highly recommended!

I enjoyed 18 Road trails at Fruita and Kokopeli trails – makes a good stop.

If you have time get off the interstate and take 128 into Moab. Cisco ghost town and more interesting drive.

Hope you get up to Burro Pass for the ‘whole’ Whole Enchilada but take layers that time of year.

Me and the GF are packing right now for Denver – fly out later this week. I’ll let you know what Grand Junction is like 🙂

    Top of WE is awesome

40c in the valley and snow/ice in places up there at a similar time of year
    Lower has the exposure

I’d probably consider doing Lower Porcupine as a single hit to enjoy it more, turned into a long day up there.

Everyone will tell you that Slickrock is the oldest, not the best. You will still do it but if the sun is up be there early as there is bugger all shade or breeze at times. It’s a bit same same and had the feel of going up all the good at times (you can do it both ways). More a done it move on for me.

Brew pub in town was OK, food better than some places I’ve done in Utah!! Think they were fairly relaxed but just have your passport handy for ID in case

Bar M trails were a good little intorduction for evening riding, short stacked loops close to the car and good for first day in town stuff.

Cheapest accommodation is probably the Lazy Lizard backpackers hostel, has cabins available. I worked there for a spell many years ago, it may have changed, still going though.

Judging by their Instagram its probably the most indie place to stay in Moab!

I’d go back and ride the whole enchilada again – probably the best trail I’ve ever ridden. If I had a week there, I’d ride it twice… Big temperature difference between top and bottom.

Poison Spider shop are great for hiring bikes, and I used the shuttle from their shop – great service, no fuss.

Slickrock was a very different ride, didn’t enjoy it as much, but would have regretted not doing it. Baking hot on a sunny day.

Slightly amused by people’s opinions on Slickrock. I did the training loop and it did my head in, so I didn’t bother with the rest of it.

I’m watching this with interest as I’m booked into the Lazy Lizard for a few days at the start of October. I was thinking TWE at the start as I’ll have been riding for a few days beforehand anyway.

I did slickrock, and the training loop on a warm July morning this year.

Loved it. Big advantage for me is I was able to ride to it from the town centre.

Rone sounds like hell, or by warm was in only 20c? I think it was closing on 35 by 9am when I was up there. Did it not just feel like the same thing repeated over and over?

Yes it was approaching late 30s by 10am on that day. Got finished by 1030. Yes it’s a bit repetitive but the views get better as you get to the halfway. The climbing starts to toll on you for sure. I was more knackered on Sunday’s marathon though!

Was out for 2.5 hrs in total.

I was sort of prepared for the heat and was getting a little nervous at the midway point but ran into a couple of other people.

The cruise back down into Moab is a cool down. 🙂

Moab temps were slightly down generally this time though and we did a PM run in 32 degrees up at Bar M. Was very squally though!

Don’t have much choice as GF is a teacher. We’ve learned to work around it when we go.

I hate heat in general but I do find the desert heat easier to deal with. We did some Vegas trails in the morning too and that was evil. Had to pack in at 930.

    Plenty of locals there though.

As an aside I can really recommend Gonzo Inn in Moab. Not cheap but well set up and good pool, facilities and breakfast.

We’re going back there next year.

You’re amused by people’s opinion on a route you haven’t actually done.

    Why?
