Was looking at quite a few off the shelf bikes for around £1500, and always found them with some kind of compromise due the price, wheelset etc so decided to build one up myself. Budget £1500.

Planet X Nano Hi Mod frame
Full SRAM Red
Shimano RS80 C24 wheelset
Size Large, comes in at 14.8lb.

Built it all up myself, which was a first.

Haven’t ridden it yet, waiting for a tropic 15+ degrees !

it’s all very well suggesting that bacon should lower his stem, but judging from the brickwork his bars are already around 3″ lower than his saddle.

How tall are you? The setup looks completely wrong. Stem too short, stem the wrongway up, inline seatpost, saddle slid forwards – or have you not “dialled” it in yet?

Nope, top of the range. There’s a new groupset coming out later this year, so expect discounts on the ‘old’ stuff. Don’t get the cassette or the front mech though, just use Force.

what is going on with that cable routing under the bar tape?

Not only are your valves not lined up with the tyre logo, but you still have the valve caps on. FAIL.

nice, light build, esp. for the money. But, that tape / cable work is really, really shoddy. do it again, and route the cables properly, use electricians tape to hold them in place.

I’ve got the SRAM Red ti front mech, and despite all the complaints about it being flexy, it shifts fine (presume that’s what you mean when you say don’t get it). It is very light.

Any chance of a spec breakdown (and if you have time where you bought stuff from). Very very tempted.

Blah blah blah, don’t listen to all the stem nonsense. I used to run a long, low stem but gradually my shoulders got tighter and tighter until I started suffering debilitating cramps which felt like I’d torn my back to shreds.

Upon the advice of SurroundedByZulus of this parish, stuck a 20mm shorter stem on, pointed it upright and wahay! I’m riding again, at speed and in comfort. Surprisingly, I’d swear the bike corners BETTER too, which seems counter-intuitive.

Different for everyone I guess, I prefer long rides to short and don’t ride in fast groups so maybe its not such a big deal for me.

Edit: Oh, and great bike! I don’t know SRAM stuff but I know thats a lot of bike for the money, nice!

Thats the only way you can route the SRAM Red levers, the gear cable comes directly out of the top, I can move it a little but it will still always show on the outside edge of the bars.

Only comment is that glossy tape is dreadful in the hot weather, and the stem does seem a bit short, is that right?

New Shimano levers have the same cable exit.

The trick is to run the brake cable along the front of the bar andthe gear cable as you have done along the back, but then use some extra padding; either a bit of old tape or the gel pad things to smooth out the lines, making the round bar into an ellipse shape.

The tape you are using is a bit crap too; use cork tape ala Cancellara above and wrap it with more overlap for a cushioned feel.

i think given some time and riding, you’ll want to drop the front down a bit more as you get more flexible. i have circa 160mm bar drop on mine 😐

Thanks for the tips, I went for a quick spin this afternoon and switched the stem, felt much better. Totally agree with the tape….it just felt slippy!!

that looks better, just watch the nose height of your saddle is tipped up slightly, you probably won’t notice until you go for a decent length ride.

i like the Fizik microtex bar tape, but it’s quite a personal choice.

get down to Eddlesborough this Sunday for a good 100km ride.

I thought that too, years ago I did some time in a workshop with Steve Snowling. Lets just say most Six day riders are a bit anal about bar tape 😉

But it must have been more than £1500 in total. I can just about see how you could put the frame/forks + wheels + most of an sram red groupset together for £1500 (if the groupset was heavily discounted), but you must have recycled a lot of other bits. The saddle/seatpost/bars/pedals/brakes etc. aren’t especially cheap parts.
