It was my first ride on a 29er tonight and I'm pretty impressed - not totally bowled over but impressed non-the-less!
A few comments...
• you can climb on a 29er - I think I'd actually have been quicker if it wasn't for the fat draggy tyres. I normally like my tyres with a lot less tread.
• a rigid 29er is still very much a rigid bike - punishing when it got rocky!
• its great on towpaths, you just barrel along!
• those small movements of the bike you make by adjusting your body position need to be exaggerated a bit more on a 29er (I got myself into trouble a couple of times by not moving enough!)
• it doesn't feel noticeably more sluggish than my normal bike.
