My two favourite tops which i wear quite a lot have started to smell of wee. They are washed regularly and i'm not a smelly person, well not wee anyway.
Do man made fibres have a certain smell lifespan?

If you leave wet clothes sitting around for a while before hanging to dry they can develop a unique smell. Try some fabreeze or fabric conditioner

IIRC, this was discussed on mtb-wales some time last year.
I recall that it is one sign of a metabolic / dietary deficiency??
Unfortunately the old mtb-wales server is no more, so none of the old threads are accesible....

some tops do become a bit minggy after a while. One of my Helly Hanson tops has become a Smelly Hanson top. Apparently the trick is to wash it in the sink with some anti bacterial fairly liquid - haven't got round to iut yet though. The Merino Wool tops are supposed to be much better at staying fresh because of the natural fibres.

Also you get secretion of Urea in your sweat which can be broken down by Urease-producting bacteria to produce ammonia. I have found nylon fabrices smell more and earlier - I wonder if this is due to proliferation of bacteria or perhaps it accelerates the breakdown of urear into ammonia?

I left a running top unwashed in our boiler room. Opened the door the next day and was nearly knocked out by a stench of rancid p155. Very hot wash the only answer. In my case I just binned it.
Merino is good for NOT stinking.

thanks all,
i thought it might be the material as non of my other clothes smell though i suppose i don't really sweat in them, so it must be me. I'll try an anti bac as i don't think you can boil wash them though i'll check
no pets, my nan doesn't ride (leave it!) i don't eat much fatty food and i've no intention of cutting down on beer.

I think it's a polypropelene/synthetic fibre thing.
Never had it happen with a cotton or merino top.

The synthetic base layers usually do pick up that fresh "stink of P1ss" smell. Try washing them with old style soap flakes. helps quite a bit I find.

Probably the beer more than fatty food, I found beer was responsible for my clothes smelling of pi55, and also waking up in the gutter, bloody noses and pools of vomit.

Give them a decent hot wash & then [whilst stll wet] pop them in a ziplock bag in the freezer overnight

See up there ^^^^^^ traditional synthetics cause bacterial proliferation and these will emit chemicals which give you the distinct BO smells. Also convert urea (present in your wee) into ammonia

Try soaking them in a weak milton solution overnight before washing them. I mean properly weak like a splash of milton to a bucket of water.
Has worked for me with no apparent ill effect on the garments.
