If its as small as a black bird then maybe a jack snipe

I would put money on that being a water rail.

+1 water rail feet are certainly right for one

The curvature of the beak rules out a snipe and woodcock, plus the colouration is rail like. An excellent Garden tick, I bet theres not many people who can add that to their garden bird tick list, beats my Goldcrest hands down!

Nice spot. Defo a water rail and not totally unusual to see a tame-ish individual chilling in a garden/public area not giving a hoot about the fact it’s supposed to be shy and retiring!
