  • Lakes riders tyre choice on the rear please

After another sidewall slashing moment and another tyre totalled need to bite the bullet and go dual ply, not really bothered about drag as I ride a fat bike but this tyre is for my Whyte 130 but would prefer a tyre that will last but I ride on a lot of wet rock!

So whats the tyre of choice! in 650b flavour!

Tried Spesh ‘Grid’ carcass tyres? Purgatory’s a good all rounder.

Ride in the Lakes maybe twice a month, Garburn, Nan Bield, Helvellyn, Dolly Wagon, Gatesgarth, High Street, Sunday Cragg, Skiddaw, Ullok Pike to name a few this year and never had a problem with a Purgatory a Grid on the rear. A riding buddy has the Slaughter Grid and he’s not had any issues with that either.

We’ve both been abroad with the bikes this year, Morroco and Basque, same tyres, no issues.

I’m sure there are others, but these two suit us as individuals and (seem to) hold up well no matter the terrain

    Just my 2p

Maxxis high roller 2, is the one you want, if you can get hold of them!
Cracking tyres, for grip and sidewall strength.
For extra grip go for the 3c version, but it won’t last very long, mine was knackard after 3 months of lakes riding, so now have the 60a.

I had a punt on a Geax Goma, for a tenner – sturdy, sticky rubber and decent tread pattern. Not light though.

I do my Enduros/Alps on a WTB Vigilante Tough. No probs.

Something maxxis in exo? FWIW I found the minion hr combo to be the most awful, why would you fit a round and a square edged tyre that grip differently as you lean?

New Maxxis Griffin looks worth a punt.

Spesh purg grid and also on one smorgasbord have served me well on the rocky stuff.

Live and ride in the Lakes, found the spec slaughter to be pretty good, I rode one all winter without issue (tad slippery at times mind). Running a wtb trail boss now but too early too give any long term feedback (so far, so good)

I usually ride a Maxxis DHR2 Exo (60a) as that’s what’s on the rear of my 29er, but they are not bulletproof and I do put holes in it if I get over-excited on the descents.

Have a read of this, it’s the best option about at the mo I think…

PS. They’re £35 from Merlin at the mo in 650b. I know this because I just bought one.

Minion 2.35 dual ply casing, 60a, FRONT. Yes, front on the rear. It’s not a big volume tyre, but it’s grippy enough and the sidewalls are as bombproof as they come, so you can run lower pressures on the descents. Never ripped a sidewall over the course of lots of epic Lakes descents – Warnscale, Ullock, both sides of Nan Bield, Sty Head, Black Sail etc etc.

I live and ride in the Lakes. The Minion DHF is one of the most popular all rounders up here. My personal favourite is the EXO front and rear and haven’t managed to tear one of those yet. Unlike the continental which lasted half a ride before the side wall tore.

I very much disagree with those recommending any Maxxis Exo tyres for the rear (even though it’s what I’m using myself til it wears out!). I just don’t think there’s enough meat on them compared to proper UST’s or, of course, dual-ply. The problem I’ve found with the HRII’s in particular are slices to the actual tread… The only other tyre I’ve had similar problems with was a paper-thin, non-tubeless Panaracer!

put several holes in maxxis exo tyres, maxxis lust’s – gets expensive living up here! On one smorgasboard does me, 1 hole in 6 months of being ragged through lakes rock gardens, ben nevis, helvelyn snowdon etc. essentially a heavier tougher ardent casing iirc, oh and much cheaper and a great rear tyre too! I live in the lakes btw.

Yep, cheap as chips, and a chunky monkey on the front is a great pairing.

Been using one of these on the back all year Rich, very draggy but coped well on a recent four passes ride with two much better than me riders chasing me down the descents (think rat up a drain pipe) they both had punctures but none for me.

Gone with the Specialised Grid Butcher reasonable price and in stock at Evans
Maxxis Exo do not go down to well with the guys that have tried them in our group!
