  • I've split my rim around the middle. Is this common?

So, my wheel on my commuter felt a bit loose for a day or so. On my route I bob up the odd curb but nothing too gnarly. Then on Friday morning I noticed this!
There is a crack in the rim which goes most of the way around the wheel. Not good. I am thinking I’ll replace the front wheel too as they were bought as a pair.

Theres more to worry about than a split…

When you say “felt a bit loose” i’m guessing there were some spokes loose meaning there was not enough tension in the wheel so yes banging it into curbs would do that.

I checked the spokes at the time when it felt loose and they seemed OK.
I tightened the QR up to 11 thinking that was the problem.
I’m guessing now that the rim was slowly letting go, between the spoke holes, one at a time.
