Without damaging the hose or the insert?

I don’t have a vice and my thumbs are proving too weak

You need the special yellow hose clamps then gently tap them in, very difficult with out them.

if you dont have a vice or the yellow clamp jaws, try putting the hose end in boiling water for a while first before tapping the insert in.

The little brass insert is one of the reasons why I have Goodrich hoses on mine…

If you’ve got some quik-clamps with rubber feet they work just clamp it enough to hold the hose, failing that make your own blocks, drill a 6 or 7 mm hole in a bit of wood and then split the wood.

i held onto the insert with pliers, heated it up and then ‘gently’ worked it into the tubing.

    still working.

Use a hair dryer to heat the cable a bit and then the insert goes in much easier. A tip that I got here years ago that proved very useful, so thank you whoever it was.
