I need to remove my headset to replace with a new shiny Hope one.
I just need to know which size headset removal tool to use.
The headset being fitted is:
Top – Hope type 2
Bottom – Hope type H

Can I use a 1 1/8 tool or do I also need a 1.5 tool?

Any headset removal tool is basically going to be a shaped bit of metal pipe. I wouldn’t bother – use a wooden dowel or screwdriver or whatever. At the end of the day, it’s just something to bash with a hammer.

You can use the same one for both – there’s not much difference.

Oooh! I have one of those, and being qualified as an engineer I know that things work if you hit it with a bigger hammer 😛

I’ll just work very gently around the cup with a socket set bar as pickle suggested. I was a little nervous of this route.
Will I be OK in a bike stand, or will I need to brace the frame properly?

I usually put mine in a Workmate, but you don’t need to hit it that hard.

You can achieve a remarkably fine degree of control with a lump hammer… and then really smack the fecker when it won’t move.

removal tools are pretty cheap though – I would get one as sometimes you have to give it quite a whack if it is in tight.

I suppose that takes me back to my original question then.

the biggest one.

The reason for me asking is that one tool goes up to 1 1/8 and the other tool is stated as for 1.5. Would the 1.5 also work for the small cup, or would the ‘arms’ be too splayed for use on the smaller cup.
As above the headset being fitted is a Hope 2 H pick and mix jobbie.

I always used to get my LBS to do headsets.
Then i just went for it myself with a screwdriver and a hammer, then a hammer and a lump of wood.
Wondered what i was so afraid off its a doddle as long as you take your time. Keep checking to make sure its straight.

What are you taking out? If it’s larger in circumference at the bottom then use a small circumference piece of dowel to remove the top cup first, then a larger one to remove the bottom maybe? (can you tell I’ve just gone to LBS before?!)
