I already have my CV related to my subject and I’m thinking of getting a more general CV. Has anyone used one of these CV writing services as I have heard they are good, unfortunately their websites look very average.

Write your own? I wouldn’t want to employ anyone who can’t write their own CV!

I’ve not as I get my friends in recruitment to help with mine but I know of one person who has had it done and it was pretty average to be fair.

As said above, definitely write you own. I fail to see how a CV writing service could come up with a tailor made CV specifically for yourself without being too generic.

Write your own. Definitely. If you know what you’re talking about it will show in your CV, conversely a generic CV writer will make you sound generic. Now, going to a CV writing class MIGHT be okay as it would give you style points and the ability to compare notes.

In the end you have to rewrite your CV for each job you apply to. We get loads in when we are looking for folks so you really only have a page to a page and a half to show that you are good and that you have read the job advert. Sending out a generic CV however well written doesn’t cut it anymore

I used one ages ago – I think I got more interviews as a result – but it’s hard to be sure. I tried to contact them for an update recently but they’ve disappeared of the face of the earth.

I got tripped up by one phrase they used: “orchestrating resources” or something like that. The interviewer asked “wtf does that mean?”. I fessed up and said it was bollocks that a pro CV writer had put in for me. I think paying for having had the CV professionally written impressed interviewer, even though this bit of it was naff.

How many companies now simply use software to read CVs?
If it is widespread, there may well be benefit in getting it done by someone who knows what their doing

saying that, I’ve been out of the job market for 20 years so in the best tradition of STW I know nothing 🙂
