We have some Americans coming to stay (in Edinburgh) and they are asking for advice on the ‘best’ place to see the wall and we’ve never been.

They are in the Lakes just now and heading south from Edinburgh later in the week so they could see the western end on the way up or another part on the way down.

Any recommendations for a good part to visit?

Stay on the north side of it. The Romans built it to stop the barbarians getting north.

Housesteads Fort. Chesters Fort. Vindolanda Fort. Corbridge settlement.
Wallsend reconsructed fort. The stretch of wall overlooking Crag Lough/Broomlee Lough. Marycastle

As Eldridge, I’d take them for a walk around the Loughs of Crag, Greenlee and Broomlee. Also visit Chesters.

Cross the road and walk up to the smaller car park. That’s Crag Lough and the most photographed part of the Wall. Show them all the good bits then tell them the truth about Hadrian’s Roman Wall Victorian Reconstruction. If you’re coming south take them to Newcastle to see Grainger Town (voted best street in the UK); Dunstanbugh Castle and Bamburgh Castle on the the coast; Lindesfarne.
