I was at a wedding this weekend and the Groom was Scotish so there were all these kilts and tartan everywhere. It made me wonder did England ever have a national costume and if so why has it disappeared?

Maybe we could have some suggestions for a new version? LOL

kilts are just a smartened up verison of what they were 1000 years ago, in the same way we wear trousers and a shirt/jacket

Uplink, no mention of the Tramp Stamp or Ar*e Antlers, so not quite traditional. 😯

The modern kilt is a victorian invention.

This is quite interesting if you are interesting in the history of kilts…

As far as I can see from my extensive observation of English weekend visitors to Edinburgh – their national dress must be a set of flashing devil horns and a black t-shirt with “Tracey’s Hen Night” for women and a bra, panties, wig and lipstick combo for the men.

Pretty similar to the Scots who seem to descend on Blackpool with the added benefit[?] of a tartan cap & ginger wig ensemble

seems those sort of tourists are the same everywhere

Uplink – that’s actually blackpool locals you’re seeing – they look like that after generations of the womenfolk being impregnated by the marauding hordes during the Glasgow fair….

Large amounts of what we consider traditional was “re-invented” by our overly imaginative Victorian forebears!

The English don’t need a national dress or song or dish, because we won.

Nooo, not the football. The Welsh, Scottish and Irish need to have their national dress, food and anthem because they lost and the English won – you know, the fighting and wars and general conquering and that.

Even sweeter that he will probably be one of the shortest serving PM’s in the history of Britian.

Possibly the 4th shortest serving PM. But whats your point?

Short lived victory. I did say “one of”, which can include any in the bottom 4.

Didn’t need conquering as ruined themselves and so needed England to bail them out.

Think you’ll find the Scots had a disproportionate hand in sorting a lot of your wars for you – the Clan system came in rather handy after 1745

When did they win? History shows it was a Scottish king who took over England in 1603, not the other way round. Since then it has been Great Britain.

England was never great in its own right except possibly under Edward 1, who was a king who could lay claim to greatness.

What language do they speak in Scotland?* What language is on all forms, newspapers etc? What language is spoken in the Scottish Parliament?

*By the majority of people, not a few drunks in a pub in some remote Highland area.

    Nice one, miketually!
